About this artwork
I believe that for a painting to be successful the artist must be overwhelmed with a visual experience of beauty & awe.
Before making this painting I felt awe struck with beauty and passion, I wanted to commemorate it and celebrate what I saw by transcending it through a painting.
The extreme contrast between the light and dark, the direct sunlight, the intense colours, the fact that painting the figures in this position was so unconventional, and… the beautiful landscape compelled me to make a painting.
"To reach the source of beauty we must overcome lust.
This longing without lust is what we mean today by platonic love,"(sir Roger Scruton)
I was fortunate to teach painiting , in Provence and meet these young lady painters that allowed me to paint them sunbathing.
