About this artwork
The first homoerotic sexual self-portrait, this painting contains all the foundations of my work and my fantasies, whether sexual or pictorial. This canvas defined my color palette and the use of pinks and blues. The material is still present, but the raw cotton canvas remains blank in many places. The bodies are sketched to keep only the movement, the memory, the dynamic towards this kiss which creates a new world and questions the representation…

My painting is a gay vision of the male body, as much political as poetic; between taboo representation, intimate memories or LGBTQIA+ collective memory. Male anatomy and nudity become the tools of a new genre painting: the expression of a gay identity in movement, in a desire to repair the traumatized collective imagination. Desire becomes a pretext for narration, for reflection on power relations.

Samuel Perche's career is part of a personal and collective story, between intimate stories and community struggles. Once an actor for theater and television, he moved to Reunion Island, graduated from the Ecole supérieure d'art in 2017 and began exhibiting his work as a painter and sculptor. "I am a gay artist. It is the prism of all my work." In the background, in his words and in his work, this need for repair is expressed, for the care of individual and collective wounds, of traumatized imaginations of the past and the present. If identity is what passes through the body, "revealing the intimacy of gay desire" stands as a new paradigm to question the silenced and invisible parts of a "queer" identity in motion. It is through an aesthetic, both poetic and political, that he explores the idea of desire, bodies and homoeroticism, to question their representations. ©Leïla Quillacq, 2024
