About this artwork
I thought I had resolved this work in 2017 and it was exhibited in 2019. The pandemic impacted attendance and it returned to the studio where it sat until recently. Pierre Bonnard was a major early influence on me, and I remember the stories about how he would sneak into an exhibition of his work after hours to add a final touch to one of the canvasses.
Resolving any of my paintings requires that an ultimate balance of color, form, space, and surface… be achieved – so that the work projects a quality of inevitability. In September 2021 I revisited this canvas and found it lacking and was compelled to add that ‘finishing touch’. Six months later ‘Jericho’ completed its’ renaissance, and I am pleased with it.
We all know the story of Joshua and the walled city of Jericho – here, the central orb begins the emanation which will bring down the walls (for the moment, still standing in their deep red violet solidity).
