About this artwork
Part of the From the Earth and Sea collection, this piece uses madder in oil in a form that repeats itself through out the landscape of the south West, in the form of ancient stone monuments in Stone Age ceremonial circles, to eroded mill stones, to natural forms.. Madder has been imported through the small ports along the coast of the South west of England throughout history, from the times of the Celtic traders through the Middle Ages into the…
twentieth century, until the fright ships out grew the ports. It has left a historic trace of the connection between this area and mainland Europe over the centuries, marking out the cultural influences as they crossed the water. The title round and round refers to the cyclic nature of human interaction and exchange.
