About this artwork
Late in the summer of 2020 Needham created this series of peaceful balanced spaces, spaces to fall into and find calm, to remind oneself of the cyclic nature of time. Using pigments that materially embody cyclic time, Needham collected Jurassic Murdock from the beach just before it washed away, Murdock that was already a product of erosion in the Jurassic era, coupled with repurposed industrial graphite in the form of graphite rods. were hand ground, in a heavy duty pestle and mortar, served and rebounded to reach a fine grain, she painted with these pigments on gesso prepared surfaces, or paper, wood and canvas, in this case wood, the pigments were mullered into oil. the mud rock ochre, which has a naturally oily nature sits beautifully in the oil, and the brush marks echo the natural depositing of the materials, the graphite, even in oil has a drawing like quality. Each piece was trimmed and varnished to be complete.
