About this artwork
Made as part of the Alchemy to Chemistry series, exploring what happened in the industrial revolution through colour. this piece is made using a synthetic indigo. Synthetic indigo was developed based on the chemical analysis of indigo. This process eliminated variations in the colour as are found in nature, and selected only certain colourants. At the time this was associated with ideas of purity and perfection. It also allowed indigo to be produced…
without the use of slavery or indentured labour. Prior to this period this had been the main way that natural indigo was produced for several hundred years. The sythesisation of pigments through chemical analysis of ancient natural pigments meant that the experience of colour was transformed, just as once again our experience of colour is being shifted in the digital revolution, from material pigment to coloured light, and our society is shifting and changing in this same process. What happens when we change the way we see?
