A view over Vleesbay, with the shoreline of Mosselbay in the background. Historically, this bay was christened by the Dutch explorer Paulus van Caerden. Due to bad weather on 14 July 1601 Van Caerden was forced to seek refuge in this little protected bay. He was pleased to discover that many local inhabitants ashore were willing to trade their well-fed livestock for scrap metal and other Western valuables – hence he named it Vleys Baeye, the Old…
