About this artwork
As a child in West Virginia, my family often visited a shoddy public pool called "Harmony Acres." While this name should bring to mind a pastoral scene or at least a daytime soap opera, for me, it was simply a dingy puddle that had seen much better days, or perhaps decades.
Much as the pool itself deteriorated in a Lynchian, off-key way, the two figures here turn from beings into a pattern, disrupted by the woman's ovine lower half. Does the man… knowingly commit bestiality, if her transformation is literal at all?

Sharon Shapiro is an American contemporary artist who lives and works in Virginia. She received a BFA from the Atlanta College of Art and is currently an MFA candidate at the Maine College of Art. Her figurative paintings portray opposing forces; the subject matter is both gentle and abrasive, fantastic and real, utopian and dystopian.
