The bathers began years ago as mail art. Postcards and packages would be adorned with cartoony wading, floating and frolicking figures in water. As they evolved onto canvas and paper as gestural figures they’re ghosts also suggested a presence of the… past. Following this impulse the artist collected vintage sources for points of departure notable for their distance from the present. Painting people who very likely, by now, are/were long dead the thread of mortality wove a deeper fabric which contains the end of summer as symbolic as the end of youth and ultimately life itself. They are bathers in the spirit world; wet with wonder.
