About this artwork
In composing Surf Safari, I used an amalgamation of images to create a figure that embodied the complete freedom that the ocean can instill. She strides with confidence while her downward glance gives a feeling of of inward contemplation. The sun rests on her face and shoulder and the wind blows her hair. I chose a rich palette that reflects the ocean setting with color that is intense but not too bright, and I used blocks of color that alternate…
between the foreground and background to keep a sense of abstraction in the piece. I primarily used wide palettes instead of brushes to skip the paint along the surface.

« Beauty is in the details; I allow my work to follow an accidental course to create paintings that have movement, fluidity, contrast and multiple layers. »
U.S. painter Sheryl Daane has a degree in printmaking, but has more recently moved to more abstract and figurative work. Inspired by nature, Daane hopes to shine a light on the fragility of the earth by showing the beauty in its details. Daane's experimental process involves using polymers and metals with oil and acrylic paint. With rough strokes and blocks of color, Daane's paintings are elemental and expressive.
