About this artwork
'Unsealed' is a series of paintings exploring ideas about our relationship with the past through the use of vintage comic book imagery. Each painting depicts an unsealed envelope containing panels cut from old comic books. Some of these panels feature superheroic images of liberation: breaking free from chains or flying away. Other panels show horror comic images of being trapped: ensnared in a giant spider's web or dragged into a waiting grave by…
skeletal hands. These two types of scenario suggest two attitudes to the past: it can be something that imprisons us or, if dealt with fully, it can be something that offers liberation

« "My fascination with pop culture and ephemera inspires me to create illusionistic paintings made using classical techniques." »
Simon Monk is a painter who resides in the United Kingdom and has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Switzerland, France, Australia, and the UK. Through his works, he conveys the idea of inhabiting two worlds at once – one being an every-day reality and one filled with fantasy and imagination. Monk is continuously fascinated by how painting can dignify a cheap or otherwise insignificant object. He applies many layers of translucent colors and uses high-quality oils and alkyds in his pieces.
