With "Bar Scene," I am not capturing a photorealistic depiction of a real place, but rather the emotional and sensory essence of urban nightlife. The painting is a visual translation of snatches of voices, the clinking of glasses, dense atmospheres, and fleeting encounters under the cover of dim light.
In the style of Neo-Expressionism, powerful, dynamic brushstrokes and an intuitive layering of colors dominate. The forms break down traditional… contours and merge into an "inner landscape" of the moment: silhouettes of figures are suggested, yet seem to dissolve into the surrounding noise. Contrasting highlights cut through deeper, shadowy nuances, reflecting the typical, almost tangible tension of a bar atmosphere, a place that offers both intimacy and anonymity.

Simon Thon studied at the Ruhr Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently worked in advertising before becoming a freelance photographer. His photographic work also maintains a clear artistic expression. Nevertheless, painting remains his true focus. In his studio, his work evolved from early figurative, realistic motifs to increasingly freer abstraction. He rejects the constraints of a single style and understands art as an open process. His painting thus becomes an intimate form of communication and, at the same time, an instrument for understanding the world and its current tensions. Social contradictions, frictions, and shifts act as underlying forces in his paintings, lending them both emotional and intellectual urgency.
