About this artwork
I have always loved painting chairs. Empty chairs imply the sitter, their human inhabitants. To be honest this painting plagued me in its making. But sometimes I feel very close to the idea that was penned by Paul Valéry in 1933 and often attributed ofOscar WIlde "Art is not completed but only abandoned"
The thing I like best about this painting is the fact that I was true to the fact that I could not see the back left leg of the chair as I painted… it. Sometimes you have to lie about what you say in order to make a painting work, or be true, and somehow the truth of the perspective of the missing leg seems important to me. I wish I was able to get the upholstery more true, and I tried and tried and tried for over a year, but never was able to get to the place I wanted to be with it. So finally, I did not know how to try again, as each time I tried it was wrong in a different way.

Skip Snow is an American painter whose work attempts to reconstruct rather than deconstruct meaning. Having followed his artistic vocation since the age of 16, his paintings resonate with a sense of freedom from convention, which echoes Snow’s own truth. He creates using oils on rectangular canvases and prefers not to work from photographs. This allows for greater artistic freedom and interpretation, as he feels that an overdependence on style can obscure true communication.
