About this artwork
Part of Sofiya's series of six paintings based on the Rocky Horror Picture Show (full description of the project is in the album's description).
Finding the liberating story resonating with her both aesthetically and ideologically, Sofiya created a series of portraits based on RHPS using her own visions for the story’s characters. Her goal was to show the insecurities and humanity of these extravagant characters to reveal the aspects of their personalities… that were not fully explored in the original.
This painting shows one of the first scenes of the musical - the engagement of Brad and Janet in the middle of cemetery. In the beginning of the story they believed in seeing their destiny in building a classic nuclear family but even the environment of their engagement showed how artificial and false their believes and expectations were. Sofiya chose to play with this narrative by creating the contrast of pastel colors and peaceful emotions with the darkness of graveyards.

« Creating images layered with narratives helps me escape the limits of spoken language. »
Sofiya Kuzmina is an exciting Russian-American mixed media painter based in New York, who has exhibited her work throughout the US and garnered impressive social media success. Growing up alongside two historically opposing nations, she learned to see power in the expression of sincerity and vulnerability. Her work is thus centered on intimate moments of her own life, and she explores complex yet relatable ideas such as immigration and identity. Kuzmina's subject matter defines the choice of the materials she uses, which can vary from traditional oil paint and watercolor to flowers, Christmas lights, and aluminum mesh.
