I am Sonali Jain, a visual artist based in the rolling countryside of Leeds, Yorkshire, where I live with my husband and two daughters. Originally from the vibrant chaos of Mumbai, I carry the rich sensory tapestry of Indian culture—its colours, music, rituals, and flavours—as an enduring influence on my work.
My practice centres on textured abstract paintings in acrylic oils and mixed media. I build layers with depth and tactility to evoke the geological strata of landscapes, the rhythmic motion of coastlines, and the raw spirit of wild animals. Texture is not merely a technique but a metaphor: it mirrors the accumulated layers of memory, emotion, and place, inviting viewers to touch, linger, and uncover hidden narratives beneath the surface.
Growing up, my early passion for art was nurtured by encouraging teachers, leading to national recognition in India as a child. Now, immersed in Yorkshire’s untamed beauty—the moors, seas, and wildlife—I explore the intersection of identity, belonging, and the natural world. My abstracts capture fleeting moments of connection: the quiet resilience of snowdrops, the playful bond between creatures, the dreamlike blur of forget-me-nots. Through bold yet harmonious palettes and organic forms in acrylic oils, I seek to translate the emotional resonance of environments into visual poetry that feels both intimate and universal.
