About this artwork
Italy - Golden Hour - Light and color play in the Cilento. I look down into the plain of Paestum, the Sele River, and across to the Gulf of Salerno towards Capri on the horizon. I stand on the terraces of Trentinara, and an intense, warm light breaks over the sea, enveloping it in orange.
Golden. It's almost unreal, and I depict this moment, this place of the soul, in just that exaggerated way. The sun later sinks into the sea at Capri—only in August.… Trentinara, once founded by 30 people, is now called the roof of the Cilento region. From the terraces, I see the entire panorama across the region, all the way to the Gulf of Poliastro and into the mountains of the hinterland. I work with several layers of acrylic and apply golden reflections as a final touch. At the bottom, you can still see the terrace railing, the metal still warm from the day's heat.
Sonja Kalmanfi is a painter who creates her art on canvas and paper using pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media. Her work is impressionistic and romantic, skillfully moving between realism and abstraction, masterfully capturing light, color, and moods. Her works convey a sensual melancholy and invite viewers to connect deeply with nature and their own inner selves at the threshold between dream and reality. She primarily uses the Cilento National Park in Italy as her setting and source of inspiration, where she spends time regularly. In her paintings, the landscapes of this country merge with the artist herself, her inner self, her experience. Sonja has a unique form of color perception. Behind every number, a color appears for her (e.g., 5 = midnight blue), a form of synesthesia in which sensory impressions merge. This intuitive perception shapes her artistic work.
