About this artwork
A polar bear swims underwater. The large figure seems to move with almost floating ease due to the weightlessness of the water. Where is this magnificent animal swimming? A small girl's head can only be seen upon closer inspection: a hint that we—like the girl—can locate the polar bear behind the solid glass of an underwater pool. Cyanotype is an old photographic fine-printing process with blue tones. This image is a unique piece on copperplate paper.… The frame is made of high-quality aluminum in high-gloss silver, with a tall quarter-round frame with great depth to the image, creating a reflection of the motif at the edge of the image. The frame sides are brushed, and museum-grade glass was used.
Sophia Maeno, who comes from a family of musicians, works with drawing, acrylic, and oil paint, drawing inspiration from both her musical and artistic training. She prefers representational motifs and allows free choice of techniques and materials in the process, giving each work its own unique expression. Her paintings capture touching, humorous, or quiet scenes from everyday life, imbued with emotional depth and the elemental beauty between humanity and nature. Through her art, she aims to convey the inexhaustible power and human fire of the creative spirit.
