About this artwork
This monumental triptych, entitled "Chroniques Silencieuses", demonstrates Sophie Dumont's ability to capture the tranquility and richness of the world of libraries in a composition that is both structured and vibrant. Composed of three vertical panels of 150 x 50 cm each, for a total dimension of 150 x 150 cm (framed in 157 x 171 cm), the work deploys a dialogue between order and color, between silence and intensity.
The three panels function… as variations on the same theme: shelves of books, meticulously structured, but brought to life by the generous application of pictorial material. The language of the knife is omnipresent, offering a raw texture that contrasts with the rigid geometry of the shelves. This opposition gives rise to a subtle tension, where harmony is built in the balance of shapes and reliefs.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
