About this artwork
In The Citadel of Books, Sophie Dumont erects an architecture of knowledge. Composed of six aligned modules, this monumental library becomes a wall of memory, a bastion of inner culture. The rigorously structured composition alternates between vertical and oblique lines, asserting a powerful graphic rhythm.
Muted hues—deep blacks, golden ochres, off-whites, and stone grays—harmonize in a sober and majestic palette. The dense material, worked with… a knife, gives each book a tactile, almost sculptural presence.
Beyond the object, Sophie Dumont celebrates the permanence of knowledge and elevation through reading. The Citadel of Books is a silent tribute to what we transmit, preserve, and protect. A powerful and balanced work that affirms the poetic power of order.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
