In Entre Deux Calmes, Sophie Dumont explores a suspended space, situated between two states of silence. The composition unfolds in broad horizontal layers, where shades of white, beige, and grey interact with a denser, almost mineral, dark band that anchors the whole.
The painting proceeds through successive layers, allowing the memory of previous ones to surface. Variations in texture and subtle surface vibrations establish a slow, meditative… rhythm, akin to an inner landscape. Nothing is static: each band seems to breathe, oscillating between withdrawal and presence.
This work is part of Sophie Dumont's exploration of time and silence, where painting becomes a space of transition. "Between Two Calms" does not impose an interpretation, but invites a pause, a moment of contemplation, between depth and light.

Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
