About this artwork
In this work created in 2018, I explore the subtle tension between order and chaos through a structured geometric construction and touches of deliberate expressionism. The vertical lines evoke canvases leaning against the wall in a studio, while the vibrant colors—particularly the intense reds—infuse the work with an almost pulsating energy.
I wanted to capture this delicate balance between control and spontaneity, between architecture and painterly… impulse. Each layer of oil, worked with a palette knife, creates a dense texture that allows the vibration of the gesture to emerge. This composition gives rise to a dynamic energy, capable of transforming a space by bringing depth, rhythm, and emotion.
This work was exhibited at the Musée de Coutances in 2020, reinforcing its place in an artistic journey that is now widely recognized.

Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
