About this artwork
Choice of frame: black or natural wood
With Literary Footprints, Sophie Dumont offers a poignant reflection on collective memory and the persistence of books in human history. This abstract composition, developed from mixed techniques combining painting, collage, and tearing, transcends simple visual representation to become an artistic manifesto on the need to preserve intellectual heritage.
An innovative technique for memory
The creative process,… where the fabric is glued, painted, and then torn off to leave only its imprint, gives the work a striking materiality. Each trace, both delicate and fragmentary, evokes the gradual disappearance of physical objects, while affirming their residual existence through their imprints. This process symbolizes the fragility of books as material objects, but also their capacity to lastingly impregnate history and collective thought.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
