About this artwork
This 40 x 40 cm oil on canvas, created in 2026, is part of his iconic series of stylized libraries. The composition is structured in three horizontal registers, where the books become autonomous pictorial forms. Variations in angle, vertical rhythms, and chromatic contrasts establish a subtle and balanced visual dynamic.
The palette, composed of warm ochres, deep reds, greyish blues, and nuanced whites, creates an atmosphere that is both dense… and luminous. The textural work, built up through successive layers and slight lifting of paint, reveals underlying strata, reinforcing the impression of depth and temporality.
At the crossroads of abstraction and figuration, this work goes beyond simple representation to evoke the construction of knowledge, the accumulation of experiences, and the inner architecture of thought.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
