About this artwork
The figures in this portrait are of the children in the artist's community. As the founder of Faces Up Uganda, an NGO that empowers children at the grass-root level, the artist is always fascinated by the little interactions, the innocent smiles, and how children relate with each other. Since the lockdown in Uganda, his interactions with the children came to an end. He always wondered what they were doing during the lockdown. To his observation,…
he witnessed that children remained optimistic and positive during the hard times of the lockdown, but, yet many of adults challenged with depression and anxiety – He felt that this is something that he needed to paint about, with a hope that these smiles will inspire more smiles. He embarked on a painting project with this hope in mind to capture children's' interactions and memories within his community of Lugala, Lubya parish, a small suburb away from Kampala in the Rubaga Division.
