About this artwork
"Clavis Rubra" is an original painting from the "Catharsis" series, an art project composed of photo-painting diptychs, born during the lockdowns and curfews linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. In collaboration with photographer Christian Legay, we explored abandoned urbex sites, capturing their silence and memory to create works in two parts:
• A black and white photograph (Christian Legay), anchored in reality.
• A painting on wood where the material… and the symbol transform the initial image.
"Clavis Rubra" is a stand-alone painting from one of these diptychs, designed to exist both on its own and as part of a whole.
At the heart of this painting, a figure in a black alb and pointed hood emerges from a background worked in deep glazes (umber, cinnabar red). This figure, taken from Christian Legay's urbex photos, becomes the symbol of an era marked by isolation and resilience.
Stéphane Alfonsi, a self-taught painter and calligrapher, fuses pigments, painting, and calligraphy thanks to a rich background with renowned masters. He works in successive layers, separating, extracting, and then reuniting materials, colors, and signs in compositions oscillating between figurative abstraction and symbolism, drawing on alchemy, collage, and superposition. His work, marked by esotericism and spirituality, resonates deeply, inviting inner transformation and the contemplation of the invisible through matter.
