About this artwork
Trial by Fire
My friend Paul Cade gifted me a painting that he felt could go no further leaving it up to me to use as a base for a new piece of my own.
The many layers of textures and materials both organic and synthetic were transformed with my industrial propane torch.
Trial by Fire resulted from the repeated passing of cleansing flames razing and transforming the previous layers into a unified expression of materials.
It feels reminiscent of… wars and relics used in ancient rites that lay foundation upon foundation for future generations.

« I am a conceptual artist who makes objects with expressionistic energy. I come up with a story and visualize how it can come to life, intuitively improvising in development. I leave the process visible. »

The painter and sculptor creates art that is born from both a conceptual and emotional place. Whether figurative or abstract, Olthuis' compositions always contain energy, gesture, time, and a sense of playfulness.
