Out of Order presents a familiar structure stripped of its function: a telephone booth that promises connection, yet offers none. The absence of the phone itself shifts the work from object to metaphor. Light spills from within the booth, drawing the viewer forward, almost insistently, as if something remains to be discovered. But what appears as an invitation is also a quiet contradiction; illumination without purpose, access without utility.
Set… against a dark, undefined landscape, the booth becomes an isolated signal in a space that feels both empty and watchful. The surrounding terrain resists clarity, dissolving into shadow, while the interior remains oddly composed, almost staged. The painting hovers between presence and absence, asking whether what is missing is more significant than what remains and whether the urge to approach is driven by curiosity, habit, or something harder to name.

Stefan de Vries is a self-taught painter who works primarily in oil, crafting his compositions from self-made photographs and digital references. His technique is controlled and deliberate, focusing on clarity, reduction, and strong tonal structure to achieve impactful contemporary figurative work. Through simplification of forms and a delicate balance between foreground and background, he conveys a sense of calm, presence, and quiet intensity—creating works that engage viewers with nuanced emotion and enduring resonance.
