About this artwork
**RetroFuture** imagines the present through the eyes of a distant future.
Everyday objects are transformed into fossil-like remains: broken, filled with plaster, and covered in a faded, porous white surface. Stripped of their original context and function, they become silent witnesses of a lost civilisation—our own.
The project is neither nostalgic nor predictive. It creates a poetic distance from the present, questioning what an object can reveal… once its purpose has been forgotten. Through these imagined archaeological remains, RetroFuture explores memory, disappearance, and the fragile ways in which a civilisation may survive: not only through what it creates, but through what is abandoned, rediscovered, and misunderstood.

Stefano Carulli, a painter by training with a scientific background, explores the aesthetic and symbolic potential of the material world. His practice began with the use of alabaster plaster and concrete powder on wooden panels, creating surfaces that evoke natural formations and moments suspended in time, filled with infinite possibilities.
His research has since expanded into sculpture through **RetroFuture**, a series in which contemporary objects are transformed into fossil-like archaeological remains. Stripped of their original function and context, these objects become silent witnesses of our civilisation, reflecting on memory, disappearance, and the ways in which the present might be rediscovered and misunderstood by a distant future.
