The character in the foreground is a human being and the impossibility of determining his identity makes it possible to attribute any identity to him.
In other words he is "man", he is each of us, he is the whole of humanity.
The cry is an instinctive, primordial, deep reaction dictated by an emotion that is itself uncontrollable and unsatisfactory.
There is a cry of fear and pain. The human being depicted in the painting is terrified and shaken… by suffering.
The pain is inside the man, just like the first cry of a newborn.
The loneliness, bewilderment and incommunicability of the painting are central themes of the study of the greatest philosophers in history: from Kierkegaard to Schopenhauer, from Ibsen to Kafka, up to Freud.
