About this artwork
"The Caravan Moves On" is a painting in which I collaged fragments of ink paintings on Wenzhou paper onto canvas. It is diverse in both drawing and painting, but the overall action is determined by the larger form. It depicts a caravan symbolically pulling the famous wheel of history through space. We see only a small, limited section here, for the wheel not only keeps turning, it is round and also rotates in a circle around its own axis. And so… the small observer at the bottom of the picture can praise the wheel's tugs as titans, then pity them as slaves, curse them as idiots, or implore them as brothers and sisters.
And the moral of the story? Nothing stays the same, and yet it always returns like déjà vu. The caravan, however, moves on...
With roots in wood carving, Steffen Mertens impresses with multifaceted drawings and ink paintings on Chinese paper. His techniques are strongly influenced by fragments and improvisation, combined with a curiosity that explores the spirit of the times.
