About this artwork
In this layered, energetic work, Steit explores the duality of Touch&Feel, using the visual language of street art to echo the physical and emotional legacies of mining in Derbyshire.
The repeated stencilled phrase “TOUCH & FEEL” evokes both command and invitation—mirroring the relentless labour of mining, where touch was survival and feel was endurance. The floral motifs, reminiscent of industrial emblems or stylised Tudor roses, bloom defiantly… over a gritty, yet glossy, sealed surface, paying homage to both the harshness and resilience embedded in the region’s landscape.
With its industrial undertones and urban palette, this piece draws a line between the hands-on toil of the mines and the emotional imprint it left on communities. It’s an artwork that asks us to reflect not only on what we see, but on what’s beneath the surface—physically and historically.
The red and white roses resemble the united Kingdom while the yellow rose resembles Derby.
Steit Slings is a conceptual and visual artist with a background in architecture and digital technology, who masterfully combines digital media, image processing, (spray) paint, 3D printing, and traditional materials. He employs layered visual collages, processed photo fragments, and mixed media installations where the chosen material and style always serve the underlying concept. Steit’s work vibrantly transforms urban exploration and sensory themes into engaging conversation pieces, evoking a deep sense of connection, shared human experience, and self-reflection in anyone who encounters his art.
