About this artwork
"River & Desert" captures a rare moment of contrast—where arid stillness meets flowing life. Inspired by the artist's journey through the endless desert landscapes of Africa, this work presents a poetic bird's eye view: two rivers carve their way through golden dunes—defiant, vibrant, unexpected.
Stephanie Künzli Ycaza modeled the surface with textured layers of plaster, water, and pigments, creating fine dunes, organic forms, and a landscape… relief that invites touch. The rivers themselves were cast with acrylic paint and sealed with a high-gloss layer of epoxy resin—they shimmer like water in the blazing sun, almost as if they were moving in the light.
This work is a visual meditation on resilience, beauty, and the fragile balance of extreme opposites. It speaks of the power of water—in regions where there is essentially no hope.
