About this artwork
This imagined collection of objects is painted in oil on copper. The picture could be seen as a museum in miniature, bringing together objects which seem to derive from different parts of the world and which appear to come from different points in history. The subjects exist in an environment that is heavily ornamented and that decoration seems to serve almost as a sort of camouflage, so that the objects do not stand out sharply against that patterned…
ground. The objects themselves seem to exist partly as figurines that might be found in the decorative arts but also as toys that might come from a quirky sort of playroom.

« I am drawn toward a sort of illusion of the implausible. The logic of the dream is central to my work. »
Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
