About this artwork
This imagined collection of objects ,including subjects from a wide range of places and times, is painted in oil on copper. The standing figure on the right is based on an Etruscan warrior figure. The blue head derives from an Aztec ceramic. On the side walls are copies of paintings by Lucas Cranach and John Singleton Copley. The "trophies" which hang from red ribbons are imagined inventions loosely related to the decorative illustration behind…
the warrior figurine.

« I am drawn toward a sort of illusion of the implausible. The logic of the dream is central to my work. »
Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
