About this artwork
The painting depicts an imaginary collection gathered on a shelf in a shallow box. Most of the subjects here are imaginary, though a few are based on actual objects. In style, the objects would appear to have been gathered from many different parts of the world and, in this sense, perhaps the painting can be thought of as depicting a kind of microcosm.

Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other.
