About this artwork
This imagined collection of objects, a fantasy on belief and mortality, is painted in oil on copper. The ornaments incorporate elements taken from a range of sources: Assyrian, Greek, and Egyptian. A few of the objects here were adapted from sketches drawn at the Pitt-Rivers museum in Oxford (one of my favorite museums.) Obviously most of the objects here are invented; even the skull is not painted from a specific specimen but is an imagined…

Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
