About this artwork
The painting takes its title from the popular song from 1967 and like the lyrics of the song the picture juxtaposes many disparate kinds of forms. Among the subjects are fantasies on plant forms, grotesques, abstracted figures and purely ornamental motives, here presented as though they exist in a shallow, 3-dimensional space. In the density of ornament and in the range of color the painting may suggest some of the psychedelic spirit of the song…
and of the era to which the song belongs.

« I am drawn toward a sort of illusion of the implausible. The logic of the dream is central to my work. »
Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
