About this artwork
This surrealistic still life is painted in oil on copper. The painting suggests a collection that includes material drawn from historical artworks, objects sketched from anthropological collections, and kitsch artifacts combined with ornamental motives. The characters depicted may call upon the storybook: mermaids and clowns, princesses and heroes. But I think the tone of the work is a little unsettling; not really the stuff of nightmares but…
touched at least a little with forms that may appear macabre.

« I am drawn toward a sort of illusion of the implausible. The logic of the dream is central to my work. »
Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
