About this artwork
The painting is executed in oil on copper, cut to shape. The cutout work lends an air of illusion which is amplified as the painting, hanging just half an inch in front of the wall, casts its shadow as though these were three-dimensional forms and not just a cutout copper plate.
The painting features objects which are largely simply the products of imagination but presents them as a plausible collection of actual forms which might be grouped together… on the humble shelf. Several of the subjects have a playful aspect, while others appear more somber. Maybe there is something a little mysterious about their juxtaposition, and perhaps the small sign, "Romantic Memories" would suffice to explain this.

« I am drawn toward a sort of illusion of the implausible. The logic of the dream is central to my work. »
Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
