About this artwork
While nothing in the painting exists in a traditional perspective space, the elements depicted are part of a fairly conventional set of forms common to much of the history of painting. Maybe the closest comparison could be drawn to the "inhabited foliage" common in manuscript paintings and going back all the way to antiquity in sculpture and painting. Some elements like the golden griffin head at the far left relate more specifically to the antique,…
while others seem more clearly near to our own times. The "foliage" in this picture is quite removed from actual botanical specimens and there are many points at which it would be hard to say whether a given part is 'plant' or just 'pattern.' Thinking of it as a collection of 'unnatural history', in this small space, there are a rather large number of specimens presented. In that sense it functions a little as a microcosm -- this "Pretty World."

Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
