About this artwork
The painting is executed in oil on a panel which is cut to shape, lending the work an element of illusionism, as though this were not a flat painting, but real objects resting on a three-dimensional shelf.
There is something a little incongruous about these unusual objects, seemingly casually placed on just an ordinary wooden shelf! Even the tiles ornamented with fleurs-de-lis have a somewhat mundane and comfortably domestic feel at odds with… the objects in front of them. Those subjects are mainly based on sketches made from actual artifacts at the Pitt-Rivers and the Ashmolean museums in Oxford. There are two wooden cups in the form of heads resting on legs; not at all the sort of cup that would fit with this homey cupboard. This juxtaposition of the very familiar and the unusual lend a quirky sense of humor to the painting.

Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
