About this artwork
The painting is a fantasy in that most of the subjects depicted do not really exist but are visualized here as they might appear if they were brought into existence. There is an apparatus that appears alchemical in nature, and the suggestion that this sort of visualization is, at least in some ways, a form of alchemy as well. On the back wall the diorama of a ship tossed by stormy seas sets an ominous tone. The cracked and peeling wallpaper behind…
speaks to a sense of age and decay. The gentleman in the figural group has lost his right arm; perhaps an accident related to the storm tossed ship?

Steve Levin is an established painter from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows nationally. Working primarily in oil paints, Levin's still lifes are based on the format of a "curiosity cabinet": they contain detailed objects, both surreal and figurative, arranged in conversation with each other. The resulting pieces are full of depth and curious juxtapositions, leading the viewer to fill in their own narrative.
