About this artwork
Painting, like any artistic endeavour, is highly subjective: beauty is in the eye of the beholder; what appeals to one person will appal another. In the preface to Oscar Wilde's book 'A Picture of Dorian Gray' it states 'all art is quite useless'. Asked by a fan to explain this Wilde said: 'Art is useless because its aim is simply to create a mood. It is not meant to instruct, or to influence action in any way. It is superbly sterile...' stuff. Especially as German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche seems to take a totally opposing view. Nietzsche said that 'art is the highest form of self expression.' He contended that artists were among the most noble and revered citizens of society because they demonstrated high autonomy and a rejection of moral obedience and societal norms. Wow. Can Nietzsche and Wilde both be right? We probably need Confucius to adjudicate this apparent dichotomy: 'Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.' Phew.

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom.
