About this artwork
Considering it's such a banal and essentially meaningless phrase 'It Is What It Is' has legs: it is the title of six albums, 10 songs, a film, a book, an autobiography and a radio show. Louis Tomlinson, whoever he is, had it tattooed across his chest. Sherif Lanre, whoever he is, said it when he didn't get picked on Love Island. Jerry Seinfeld, whoever he is, uses it in his stand up routine. Gen Z users of Tik Tok, whatever that is, turned it into… a controversial meme. So you could be forgiven for thinking 'It Is What It Is' is up there with 'I think Therefore I Am' when it comes to noteworthy dictums. And yet what does it mean: to accept a situation which is not entirely favourable. Mmmnnn, not exactly Aristotle. But of course it is the precise fatuousness of the phrase that appeals in the 21st Century. Also whilst it is not a palindrome - the same forwards as backwards - it has a particular dumb symmetry. It's cool! It's fab! It's meaningless! IT IS WHAT IT....ah forget it.

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
