About this artwork
It comes as a surprise to many people that the Dutch coastline consists of an almost unbroken, 451 kms of glorious sandy beach. The problem is that the North Sea does not match the splendour of the beach, being mostly cold, uninviting and the colour of overcooked brocoli soup. Apart from beach volleyball, dog walking, sunbathing and beach clubbing, the beach has another specific purpose - along the entire coast it is backed by high, manufactured… dunes which are the first line of defence against the Netherlands disappearing under sea levels. The principal resort along the coast is Scheveningen - The Hague by Sea - and its most striking hotel is the Grand Hotel Amrath Kurhaus. Built in the 1880s by German architects the hotel comprises 120 rooms as well as a well known concert hall in which the likes of the Rolling Stones and Ike and Tina Turner have performed. Saved from demolition in 1975 the hotel was completely renovated and reopened by Princess Beatrix in 1979.

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
