About this artwork
Abstract Art should have no 'accurate representation of a visual reality,' but whose reality are we talking about? One person's reality is another person's fever dream. Some people might see Kasimir Malevich's infamous painting 'Black Square' as the view through an attic window on a dark night. One of Jackson Pollock's drip paintings could be the after effects of an 6.8 magnitude earthquake in a dye factory. If this painting was merely called 'Semi-circles'… you may have had no idea that it has some basis in reality. In fact, this work started out as a pure abstract - the large areas of yellow and blue was intended to be purely background to some slap dash Howard Hodgkin type splodges. But then the artist got a WhatsApp from his daughter kite surfing in Mauritius and he realised the colourful potential of a swarm of kite surfers. The blue and yellow became sky and beach; abstract became reality. As US artist Ad Reinhardt said: 'Art is art. Everything else is everything else.´

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
