About this artwork
"Sunset" is allegorical of a woman's menstrual cycle. Taking the phrase "giving birth" as a reference, I found it pertinent to use the sunset as a metaphor for the time when the egg stops being fertilized and no longer fulfills its original function: the gestation of life. A woman's behavior during her period seems like a protest from nature. Hormones rebel and express their frustration, causing mood swings in the body that hosts them, and they concoct… contradictory images of moods and sensations. A long, stormy sunset that occurs once a month.
Sua Guerra, trained at the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Cuba, has worked in metal, wood, and marble sculpture, pyrography, drawing, and installations for over 20 years. He uses realist, surrealist, and hyperrealist techniques, influenced by magical realism, with remarkable virtuosity in detail and execution. His works explore philosophy, psychology, literature, and mythology, and convey profound emotions such as rebellion, human cruelty, and the confrontation between reality and the mask, generating an intense and cathartic experience of reflection in the viewer.
