About this artwork
I was considering the phrase “Breaking Dawn” as I worked on this painting—it is such a peculiar phrase. Why do we say that dawn breaks? To watch a sunrise, it is unwaveringly gradual, and yet this phrase has wormed its way into our common vernacular.
Many ancient mythologies share a motif of a world egg, or cosmic egg, from which the universe, earth, or various deities hatch. In ancient Egyptian mythology, the sun god Ra emerged from this primordial… egg. When we consider mythology as a tool for explaining the world and natural phenomena, the image of the sun hatching from an egg makes sense. Against the morning white sky, the yellow sun looks like a yolk. Hence, "Breaking Dawn" - a yolk sliding through a crack in an egg.
The painting has a sense of anticipation - the vanishing point is situated in the center of the horizon, drawing the eye to that point as thought the viewer is waiting for the first sighting of the sun, as if at any moment, the cloud-shell will break.

Sue Dion is an American painter who has exhibited nationally. She strives to create a sense of mystery with her pieces, drawing the viewer in and allowing them to make their own discoveries. Dion paints in an abstract style which leans towards expressionism and impressionism. Experienced with watercolors, she uses similar techniques with oil and acrylic. Going from light to dark, or working negatively, creating a shape by painting around it, make her work distinctive.
