About this artwork
Since lockdown the sea has become a second home for the artist. Greeff is in the ocean up to 10 times a week and her studio colour palette has changed from the reds to blues. Increasingly Greeff has become aware of the fact that in the past few decades over half the world’s coral reefs have died. The freight train of climate change afflicting our seas has now prompted a coral geneticist in Australia to breed a climate resistant coral through gene… editing. Based on her musings around these ideas the artist has created the artwork ‘sea flowers’ using the blue pigment that goes into the whitewash paint that houses in Greece are painted with. The canvas support is a well worn dhow sail she collected in Lamu in Kenya and has sailed the seas for many years.
« As a midwife in an earlier career, a mother and a fine artist, my art practice looks at notions and issues around ideas of birthing, life and death. »
Innovative and unrestrained, Sue Greeff merges elegance with a dynamic interplay of serenity and intensity. With a passion for exploring the intersection of order and disarray, delicacy and strength, and convention versus innovation, Greeff's artworks challenge the traditional boundaries of fine art with a striking vigour and emotional depth. With a four-year degree in fine art, Greeff has exhibited works that are held in both private and international collections. Boldly captivating, thought-provoking, and mesmerizing, Sue's pieces are at the forefront of a new artistic movement, redefining perceptions of beauty, identity, and the established norms of art.
