The pandemic dislocated so many of us from the lives we used to live and continues to do so. During this period I became increasingly fascinated by creating patterns out of life’s chaos – maybe a way of exerting control over uncontrollable situations.
The Jigsaw Collection looks at this shattering of normality. "Spiralling Over Landfall" imagines birds flying over the world and the changing vistas that they see whilst we are home and land based.… I create my own patterned sheets of glass. I then cut and reassembled them into a collage of juxtaposed pieces that fit together – but not quite. Just as our lives will never fit together quite so snugly again.
All my work highlights the beauty of glass and the way that it reflects colour, texture and light. I work with a range of glass elements in a cold state which I manipulate and assemble before firing and fusing them in a kiln. The different types of glass that I use include sheet, frits, confetti, stringers and paints.
Susan Purser Hope is a fused glass artist with a background in three-dimensional design and commercial interior design, celebrated for her UK-based glass art studio and community projects. She painstakingly crafts her own patterned glass sheets, cutting and recombining them into abstract collages that explore the disruption and reassembly of everyday life. Her unique techniques harness frits, confetti, stringers, and layered fusions, creating dynamic, light-filled compositions. Each piece radiates her passion for colour and story, offering restorative joy and awe—inviting viewers into vibrant, contemplative moments of wonder amid life’s chaos.
